Hello! I am Mike White and welcome to King of Kings’ Lenten Devotions, “Transformed in Christ”

Today is April 9th and this week we are reminded to Be Like Jesus with Power in the Holy Spirit.

Today’s truth that transforms is: The Holy Spirit Always Points to Jesus

Our Scripture reading is from John 12

12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting,
“Hosanna![d]”
“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[e]
“Blessed is the king of Israel!”
14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written:
15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion;
    see, your king is coming,
    seated on a donkey’s colt.”[f]
16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him. (Jn 12)

How are we “Transformed in Christ” and shaped to be more like Him?

Tomorrow is the Sunday when many churches celebrate the triumphant entry into Jerusalem for the last week of Jesus’ life. Why is this significant? God is telling a story of our rescue. All through the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit has been pointing forward to Jesus. He is the one who fulfills the prophesies and completes the mission to rescue God’s people. What kind of triumph is it? Jesus enters as a King they didn’t expect. God Himself, yet so humble He comes as a servant! His kingdom is not of earthly power! It is a heavenly kingdom set up in the hearts and lives of the people who would receive Him as King of Peace. A King of Peace who rides a donkey. What do you say to this King? The Holy Spirit again points Him out to you as the King of Peace. What’s your response? Let Him enter your heart!

My parents didn’t start taking me to church until I was 10, and I was definitely playing theological catch up.  The Trinity is a really challenging concept, regardless of age, and I found myself attempting to sort out each Person and whether I liked them or not.  Over the years, I’ve had to really wrestle with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and realized that I may have had an incorrect or incomplete Image.  I probably imposed my father on our Heavenly Father.  Jesus was always likeable, but it took years to gain a fleshed out and more accurate image.  Holy Spirit was and still is a little challenging for me to be able to articulate who He is, but I’ve grown in my understanding.  The Bible must be our ultimate source as to the correct image of the Trinity, and we have to sift out opinions and cultural influences.  The Palm Sunday account confirms the prophet Zechariah’s prophecy of our King coming humbly as Jesus broke the mold that was set by contemporary kings.  Palm Sunday was Jesus entering Jerusalem, where He would eventually be put to death to reconcile sinful humanity back to God.  The book of Romans says that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead, actually dwells in each believer.  The same Spirit, that raised our Savior, lives in me!  Scripture also says that the Holy Spirit, confirms with our spirit, that we are children of God and co-heirs of Christ.  My prayer is that in this Lenten season, we may continually return to Scripture and receive the correct image of the Trinity, and realize that the Holy Spirit is always pointing us to Jesus!
