Hello! I am Gwynne Gonnerman and welcome to King of Kings’ Lenten Devotions, “Transformed in Christ”

Today is April 8th and this week we are reminded to Be Like Jesus with Power in the Holy Spirit.

Today’s truth that transforms is: The Holy Spirit Leads Us to Love Extravagantly

Our Scripture reading is from John 12

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3 Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.4 But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5 “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages. 7 “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8 You will always have the poor among you,[c] but you will not always have me.”

How are we “Transformed in Christ” and shaped to be more like Him?

Today’s reading is takes place right before Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem for the last week of His life. God the Father wants to pour out His love on His Son, and He uses Mary (sister of Martha and Lazarus). She pours out the costly ointment that reminds us Jesus is the Messiah. Messiah means the Anointed One. The Greek word is “Christ.” The Holy Spirit is pictured as poured out in anointing. The fragrance, like prayer, fills the room. It is extravagant love from the Father given by Mary. Jesus will take this smell with Him into the next week’s trials. As he smells it again, He will remember the fragrant love of God Himself poured out on Him by Mary. We, like Mary, can pour out our love on Jesus in extravagant ways as we love those around us even in the simplest of ways!
